We’ve been quite busy at HQ brainstorming on how we can improve our membership and answer the call for more teachings. So, we’ve decided to implement online ‘live’ teachings on the third Thursday of every month as a means of reaching as many of you as we can, no matter where you live.
Our first teaching will be done by Heather Regan-Addis on Thursday the 21st of May at 7pm on the subject of settling the mind through sitting meditation.
When we start to take stock of what our mind is like normally, we quickly notice that it has difficulty coming to rest. It is often flighty and on the move. If we wish to relax and simply be at ease, we can put our body down and remain in one place, but the mind is not likely to follow suit. It quickly moves away into thinking and roves randomly from one thought to another, one theme to another, one emotion to another – ceaselessly. This won’t be experienced as particularly problematic if the thoughts and emotions involved are pleasant and harmonious, but this is often not the case and we find ourselves ruminating about things from the past or worrying about the future that hasn’t happened yet.
Despite what we might think when we observe our unsettled mind, the mind is actually naturally inclined to settle – just as water will settle if left undisturbed. Normally, we don’t notice this because we are continually involved with the content of our mind (our thoughts and feelings), and this involvement is precisely what keeps it unsettled.
Therefore, as part of our mindfulness training, we work towards settling our mind through a series of meditative steps. By using the breath as both a regulator and an anchor, the mind is able to become more focused and less inclined to distraction. On Thursday the 21st of May, Heather Regan-Addis will give a talk on this process as well as lead a practice in settling the mind. There will be time for questions and answers afterwards.
